Properties of Methyl Cellulose
Methyl cellulose have excellent water retention properties, and are widely used in the curing of cement and plaster, and some water-based paints and wallpaper adhesives with certain requirements for adhesion. The water retention capacity of methyl cellulose will increase with the increase of the hydrophilic group content and viscosity.
Metabolic Inertness
As food and drug additives, methyl cellulose products will not add calories to the diet.
PH Stability
Methyl cellulose are stable in the pH range of 2.0-13.0.
Thickening Property
In aqueous solutions and non-aqueous systems methyl celluloses both have thickening effects. The thickening property is related to the viscosity, molecular weight, chemical structure and concentration of methyl cellulose.
Adhesion
Methyl cellulose can be used as adhesives of paints, papers, tobacco, food, pharmaceutical products and ceramics.
Lubricity
Methyl cellulose products can be used in rubber, adhesive and ceramic extrusion process to reduce friction, and can also be used in construction to improve the pumpability of the concrete and spraying plaster.
Film-Forming Property
Methyl cellulose can form transparent, tough and supple films, and can well block oils and fats. In food applications, this property is often used to retain the moisture and prevent the absorption of oils when cooking. When exposed to the humid air, the film can reversibly absorb water, and the water absorption is related to the air relative humidity.
